Massive Berlin Protest As 100,000 People March In Ukraine Solidarity

Berlin: More than 100,000 people protested in solidarity with Ukraine in Berlin on Sunday, calling for the end of Russia’s invasion and saying history should not repeat itself.

Train and underground service was interrupted in some parts of the German capital as thousands made their way to the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin, near the Russian embassy.

The crowd of protesters bearing signs reading: “Stop the War”, “Putin’s last war” and “We stand with Ukraine” along with Ukrainian and European Union flags, extended from the Victory Column in the heart of the capital.

The protest comes as Russia’s attack on Ukraine entered its fourth day, triggering three sanctions package from Germany and its Western allies and pushing Berlin to shift its decades-long policy of not exporting arms to conflict zones.

“Ukrainians: You’re welcome here!” shouted one of the speakers as the crowd cheered.

More than 368,000 refugees, mainly women and children, have fled the fighting into neighbouring countries, the UN refugee agency said on Sunday, citing data provided by national authorities.

The police had expected some 20,000 people to participate in the protest but estimated that the number of people who have taken part is a “six-digit figure”, adding that more people were still flocking to the demonstration.

Washington: President Vladimir Putin’s decision to place his nuclear forces on alert amounts to “irresponsible” behavior, NATO charged Sunday.

“This is dangerous rhetoric. This is a behavior which is irresponsible,” the alliance’s secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg told CNN amid heightened tensions over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“And, of course, if you combine this rhetoric with what they’re doing on the ground in Ukraine, waging war against the independent sovereign nation, conducting a full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, this adds to the seriousness of the situation,” he added.

Japan will sanction Putin and prime minister “indicates” nation will join Russian SWIFT ban, NHK reports

Japan will freeze the financial assets of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin “and other key government officials” following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio said, according to Japan’s public broadcaster NHK.

Prime Minister Fumio said Russia’s actions are a violation of international law that Japan strongly condemns, NHK reported Sunday.

He also said a united response was needed to safeguard international order, NHK reported.

Prime Minister Fumio also “indicated that Japan will join the United States and European countries in blocking selected Russian banks from the SWIFT international payment network,” NHK said.

The prime minister also said Japan will provide an additional $100 million in emergency humanitarian aid for the people of Ukraine, in addition to a prior pledge amounting to ‘about 100 million dollars,’ NHK reported.

Ukraine invasion: Kharkiv fighting ‘like Star Wars above your head’

Ukrainian forces say they have repelled an attack on the country’s second city Kharkiv after fierce clashes with Russian forces.

Regional governor Oleh Synehubov said the city was now rid of Russian troops – after street-to-street fighting.

Thousands spent the night in basements and shelters, with intense shelling described by one resident as “something like Star Wars above your head”.

“The wave of the blast was so strong that my ears popped,” another said.

A nine-storey residential tower was hit, emergency services said, killing an elderly woman while about 60 people survived after hiding in the basement.

Russian troops also blew up a natural gas pipeline nearby, according to a Ukrainian state communications agency.

Kharkiv residents who spoke to the BBC told of their fear and apprehension as the attack raged on, as well as their pride in Ukrainian forces and reservists in holding back Russian troops.

Just before an explosion in the Saltivka district, one woman said her neighbour was instructing their young children on what to do in the event of a blast.

“Listening to this was horrific, my hairs were standing on end at the thought that three-year-old children were having to be taught what to do during shelling,” she said.

“Throughout the night one young girl kept waking up her mum. She’d sit up crying screaming: ‘Mom, I’m scared, please save me, save me now.’

“She only calmed down by the morning after her mum had sat holding her all through the night.”

The 34-year-old, who requested anonymity, added: “Right now, the offensive against the city is still going on. I hear the blasts all the time – even though I know Kharkiv is controlled by Ukraine, 100%.”

For university professor Dmitry Shabanov, the fighting came uncomfortably close.

“Tanks were fighting only a few kilometres from our home, and the operation to counter some saboteurs that entered Kharkiv was just next to our yard,” he said.

“We are staying in our house with a cellar, it’s my wife and me, two sons who are seven and 11 years old, and my 80 year old mum. We keep the boys in the cellar most of the time,” he added.

Maria Avdeev, another resident, said groups of Russian troops were eliminated “one by one” by the Ukrainian military.

“Also, a number of Russian soldiers and officers were captured, so they did not basically fight back, when they saw that they had no other option,” she said.

Oleksii Svid, 30, managed to travel to buy food for his family and his pets, Kuzya the cat and Larry the dog, on Saturday but found supplies were running low.

Nonetheless, he said many local people remained resilient – with talk about how to prevent Russian troops from entering the city and ways to help the Ukrainian army.

“The main issue right now it to gain access to the food, as most shops don’t have a way to refill stock of sugar, flour, dairy, and meet,” he said. “There’s also a shortage of fuel in gas stations in the city.”

The BBC has verified a video on the Telegram messaging platform which shows Russian trucks driving into Kharkiv.

Another video verified by the BBC showed a group of Ukrainian soldiers taking cover behind a wall, while one launched a shoulder-fired missile.

It comes after an oil terminal outside the capital Kyiv – which is under a strict curfew until Monday morning – was attacked by missile, prompting toxic air warnings.

In the north-eastern city of Okhtyrka, the local governor said at least six Ukrainians – including a seven-year-old girl – had died as a result of a Russian attack on Friday.

A kindergarten and an orphanage were among the buildings reportedly hit, which Russia has denied.

In Koryukivka, in Chernihiv region, residents were seen stopping advancing Russian tanks by walking them back en masse.

The full extent of casualties in Ukraine is very hard to confirm. The country’s human rights commissioner says 210 civilians have been killed.

Among the dead are children – one killed when a children’s hospital was shelled in Kyiv and one in a Russian attack on a kindergarten that claimed six lives near the northern border at Okhtyrka. Nine civilians have been killed in Kyiv, and 10 ethnic Greek Ukrainians died in air strikes on villages in the south-east, Greek officials say.

So far the United Nations has recorded 64 confirmed civilian deaths and many more wounded, and says it expects the true number to be much higher.

Military deaths are also very hard to verify. The UN said by Saturday at least 134 Ukrainian military had been killed. Russia censors details of its casualties and so far only one death is confirmed. Ukraine says 4,300 Russian servicemen have so far died but even Ukrainian officials say those figures are not clear.

Europe, Canada Move To Close Its Skies To Russian Planes

European nations and Canada moved on Sunday to shut their airspace to Russian aircraft, an unprecedented step aimed at pressuring President Vladimir Putin to end his invasion of Ukraine, the biggest attack on a European state since World War Two.

The ban on Russian jets comes as the airline industry continues to grapple with the effects of the global pandemic that is still straining demand for travel.

Germany and France joined Britain, the Nordics and Baltic states in announcing bans on Russian use of their airspace, a major escalation in a tactic by mostly NATO allies to wage economic war against Putin in retaliation for the invasion.

The West, led by the United States, also unveiled severe financial sanctions against Russia, which has called its assault on Ukraine a “special operation” to dismantle Kyiv “junta”, capture dangerous nationalists and destroy Ukraine’s military.

Russia is now widely expected to further retaliate against the air blockades and other sanctions. It has already responded to the earliest European airspace bans with its own edicts barring airlines from Britain, Bulgaria and Poland.

Without access to Russia’s airways, experts say carriers face diverting flights south while also avoiding areas of tension in the Middle East – adding significant time and cost.

“France is shutting its airspace to all Russian aircraft and airlines from this evening on,” French Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari said in a tweet, an announcement echoed across continental Europe.

Earlier, Germany’s transport ministry said it would close airspace to Russian planes and airlines for three months from Sunday, with the exception of humanitarian aid flights.

Canada also said on Sunday it had shut its airspace to Russian aircraft effective immediately..

Air Canada said it “does not operate to destinations in either the Ukraine or Russia, and at all times, we comply with all airspace restrictions per Transport Canada and the FAA (U.S. Federation Avian Administration).”

Nordic countries Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Iceland also made similar announcements, following on from closures already declared by Britain, Poland, Bulgaria, Czech Republic and Romania. Baltic countries Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are also closing their airspace to Russian airliners.

“It is now absolutely necessary to proceed with further touch measures to isolate Russia,” Swedish EU Minister Hans Dahlgren told public service radio SR.

Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Timo Harakka said in a tweet late on Saturday that Finland, which shares a long land border with Russia, was preparing a similar closure.

6 babies born in bomb shelters across Ukraine this weekend

Ukrainians have been sheltering in basements and subway stations for days now — and that includes heavily pregnant women. Across the country six babies were born in shelters since Friday, the country’s Parliament said on its Telegram channel.

One women gave birth in a Kyiv subway station; two women delivered their babies in a makeshift maternity ward in a shelter in Kherson; in a shelter in Kolomyya, in Ivano-Frankivksk Oblast, a baby girl was born; and on Sunday a set of twins were born in a Kyiv shelter. All the infants are healthy and their mothers doing well, the statement said.

“These are the faces of this war. This is the sign that life goes on and we are not giving up,” it added.

Nations Approve Major UN Report On Accelerating Impact Of Climate Change

Paris: Nearly 200 nations approved a major UN climate change report detailing the accelerating impacts of global warming on Sunday, at the end of a sometimes fraught two-week meeting overshadowed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed that debates had concluded over the report’s crucial “Summary for Policymakers”, a 40-page overview distilling the thousands of pages of scientific research, which has been reviewed line-by-line and will be made public on February 28.

Species extinction, ecosystem collapse, mosquito-borne disease, deadly heat, water shortages, and reduced crop yields are already measurably worse due to global heating.

Just in the last year, the world has seen a cascade of unprecedented floods, heatwaves and wildfires across four continents.

All these impacts will accelerate in the coming decades even if the carbon pollution driving climate change is rapidly brought to heel, the report is expected to warn, according to an early draft seen by AFP in 2021.

It will also underscore the urgent need for “adaptation” — a term that refers to preparations for devastating consequences that can no longer be avoided.

In some cases this means that adapting to intolerably hot days, flash flooding and storm surges has become a matter of life and death.

The 2015 Paris deal calls for capping global warming at “well below” 2C, and ideally 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit).

In August 2021, another IPCC report on the physical science of human-caused climate change found that global heating is virtually certain to pass 1.5C, probably within a decade.

Earth’s surface has warmed 1.1 degrees Celsius since the 19th century.

“We cannot escape the climate crisis,” said Mohamed Adow, the head of think tank Power Shift Africa.

He said the IPCC report would be useful for people to understand “the scale of the suffering we will endure” if humanity does not drastically cut greenhouse gas pollution — as well as adapting to the challenges to come.

“The backbone of climate action is science and the science is clear. It’s telling us how dire our situation is. What is lacking is action from governments,” he told AFP.

European Union To Propose Funding Weapons, Fuel For “Heroic” Ukraine

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell will propose using EU funds to help finance weapons and other supplies such as fuel for Ukraine.

“I will propose to (EU foreign) ministers to use the European Peace Facility for two emergency assistance measures,” he said in a statement on Sunday, ahead of a virtual meeting to discuss fresh sanctions on Russia.

“These aim to finance the supply of lethal material to the heroic Ukrainian army, which is fighting with fierce resistance against the Russian invaders and provide urgently needed non-lethal supplies, such as fuel,” he said.

Ukraine Refugee Tally Tops 368,000 Since Russia Invasion, Says UN

Kharkiv: The UN refugee agency said Sunday more than 368,000 people had fled Ukraine since Russia invaded on Thursday.

“The current total is now 368,000 and continues to rise,” United Nations High Commission for Refugees or UNHCR said in a tweet, adding the new figure was based on “data made available by national authorities”.

A large number of those escaping to neighbouring countries have crossed over into Poland, where the authorities have counted some 156,000 crossing since the invasion started early Thursday.

Border guards counted some 77,300 arrivals from Ukraine on Saturday alone.

The refugees have arrived in cars, in packed trains and even on foot.

Those who arrive with nowhere to go can count on the help of volunteers — both members of NGOs and private citizens.

Others have also headed to Moldavia, Hungary, Slovakia and Romania.
